5 NYC Nail Salons That Don’t Poison Their Workers
Recently, this New York Times expose on nail salons in NYC went viral. And for good reason, since it was an eye-opener, complete with tales of workers being treated poorly (bordering very closely on human trafficking in fact), with wages as low as $3/hr, poisoning from chemicals (so severe that it causes miscarriages), long hours without overtime, and racist hiring practices. Scary stuff, right?
After reading the NYT article, many posed the question to us…what can I do? Are all nail salons like this ? Is there anywhere that I can go? Clearly, your $15 manicure doesn’t seem so cheap when you know that the woman applying the nail polish is being mistreated so poorly that she is literally potentially paying with her life.
Well, one idea (probably the best, and definitely the most foolproof) would be to just avoid nail salons altogether, as it is a luxury, and one that probably is not worth having this amount of guilt on the brain over (understatement). A second option is to make it clear to the owners of your current salon that you care about whether they pay their workers well and use non-toxic materials and ask them if and when they would be able to improve how they operate .
Finally, another option is to find salons that do the right thing. In other words…to SWICH to supporting better businesses. You may pay more, but…you get what you pay for, right?
So we put out a request to our friends in NYC to come up with potential better nail salons in NYC that might be worth a try. Here are 5 places they came up with. Check them out and let us know what you think. And if you know of others (in NYC or other cities), feel free to shoot them over so that we can share!
